Matteo Cancellieri Shows Flashing Moments of Brilliance in Bright Spot for Unstable Lazio

The feeling at their home stadium was decidedly gloomy this past Saturday. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had let in 10 goals while managing only two goals in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were finishing their most recent demonstration in a long-running conflict with club owner Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Unraveling?

Was Lazio's season falling apart, or had there never been a binding element maintaining its structure in the first place? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, before he publicly stated that the board had failed to disclose the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for financial irregularities. Reports that he might quit were not true, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Biancocelesti appeared equally disorganized on the pitch as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the rest of their opening fixtures, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, it has been hard to tell if they're getting better or collapsing.

The Youngster's Surprising Return

One individual continued to smile throughout. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to be at Lazio this season. He completed the previous campaign on loan at Parma and, early this summer, Lazio were advocating for him to extend his stay a while longer. The signing restriction necessitated a reconsideration. Lazio could not afford to thin their squad without replacements.

He joined in the first place during Sarri's previous tenure, then a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 matches in the league for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those as a substitute. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who left following that term, subsequently claimed Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential only to bench him consistently."

Finding His Best Role

Maybe Sarri was persistently working to work out the specific characteristics of his skill set. Billed as a wide forward on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself the majority of that term as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. Across 63 games while playing for Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
